NVIDIA Launches DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27 With 3D-Guided Neural Rendering

NVIDIA’s next leap in game graphics is no longer a demo. DLSS 5 is live in NBA 2K27, the first title to ship with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. The feature arrived with GeForce Game Ready Driver 616.64 and the PC launch of 2K and Visual Concepts’ latest basketball sim. Official support is limited to GeForce RTX 50 Series desktops and laptops, plus GeForce NOW Ultimate streams from NVIDIA-operated RTX 5080 rigs. Players turn it on in Video Settings under “DLSS Neural Rendering.”This is not just another upscaler. Previous DLSS versions rebuilt resolution, invented extra frames, or cleaned ray-traced lighting. DLSS 5 sits at the end of the pipeline and uses AI to add lighting and material detail that real-time budgets usually skip. NVIDIA says the engine frame still decides what must stay. Artists decide what may change. What Players Are Supposed to SeeVisual Concepts built NBA 2K around broadcast realism and scanned athlete faces. DLSS 5 is being sold as the layer that makes those scans behave more like skin and hair under arena lights.NVIDIA’s examples focus on small things. Light passing through ears. Warmth under the skin. Hair catching light. Tighter contact shadows on a jersey collar. Cade Cunningham and Jayson Tatum are the before-and-after faces in the company’s comparisons. The pitch is not a new character model. It is the same geometry with more convincing light. That is a deliberate answer to the backlash from March. When DLSS 5 was first shown, critics called it a real-time generative filter — motion smoothing for games, or an Instagram pass that “yassified” faces. Some early images looked like the AI had redesigned the character. NVIDIA now stresses that the game’s buffers are an “unyielding foundation,” and that developers can apply the effect to a plate of food or a patch of foliage while leaving a face alone.Developers also get a choice of models with different looks. The studio, not the player, is meant to pick the one that matches the art direction. Why NBA 2K27 Is the First GameA sports game with hundreds of real human faces is a brutal test. If the AI warps a star’s likeness, fans notice immediately. If it only improves subsurface scattering and hair, the feature looks like a graphics option instead of a deepfake.NBA 2K27 also already carries the rest of the GeForce stack: Reflex, DLSS Super Resolution, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, and ray-traced reflections. NVIDIA can show DLSS 5 as one more toggle in a suite rather than a lonely science project. The game itself adds MyCAREER start points across five historical eras, co-op MyCAREER, and a cinematic campaign featuring Vince Staples. Those modes will be the places players actually stare at faces for hours. That is why NVIDIA is talking about ears and collars instead of city skylines. The Hardware CatchOfficially, you need an RTX 50 Series card. That is the political line as well as the technical one. NVIDIA spent six months taking DLSS 5 from a dual-RTX 5090 lab demo to a single 50-series GPU. The company calls that a five-times efficiency gain. The published frame-rate charts look spectacular until you read the footnotes. Many of the 250-to-590 fps numbers include 6x Multi Frame Generation. Strip that multiplier out and the cost of neural rendering is clearer. Independent coverage has noted that DLSS 5 can still take a large bite out of native frame rate — on the order of half in some unofficial tests — before generated frames pad the result.NVIDIA says a midrange RTX 5060 can run NBA 2K27 at 1080p with ray tracing, Ultra settings, and DLSS 5 if the CPU is fast and frame generation is piled on. Higher cards are recommended for 1440p and 4K. Those claims are marketing benchmarks, not a promise that every 5060 laptop will look like the press deck. There is a second path: GeForce NOW. Players without a 50-series card can stream the enhanced version from the cloud. That is NVIDIA selling the feature as a service as much as a driver checkbox.RTX 40 Support Is Coming — LaterThe more important hardware note is not the 5060 graph. It is RTX 40.NVIDIA has now said official GeForce RTX 40 support is planned. The company wants to finish tuning 50-series performance and ship more model updates this fall, then work on 40-series. No date was given. That matters because the DLSS 5 runtime leaked in the NBA 2K27 early-access build. Modders already forced the library onto RTX 40, 30, and even 20 cards, and dropped it into other games. Results were uneven. Official 40-series support would turn a hobbyist hack into a product feature and take pressure off the “buy a 50-series or wait” message.Until that driver arrives, the official story remains 50-series plus the cloud. The Fight Over Artistic ControlThe controversy will not die because a basketball game looks slightly more sweaty. If DLSS 5 becomes a final rendering stage that every engine can call, studios gain a shortcut to film-like materials. They also risk a world where NVIDIA’s model, not the texture artist, decides how leather, skin, and metal respond to light. NVIDIA’s answer is the SDK and the artist-guided masks. Critics will believe that when more than one game ships with a look that still feels like the original studio. There is also a philosophical split inside PC gaming. One camp wants the pixels the developers signed off on. The other camp wants every new AI pass that makes a scene look expensive. DLSS Super Resolution already won a version of that argument by becoming default in hundreds of titles. DLSS 5 is a bigger ask because it changes appearance, not just sharpness and frame rate.NBA 2K27 is a soft landing for that argument. Nobody is protecting a painterly art style. They are protecting likeness rights and broadcast sheen. If the feature survives that test, expect it in action games next — NVIDIA has already hinted at broader support, including names that leaked through mods. How to Turn It OnThe official path is short. Install Game Ready Driver 616.64. Launch NBA 2K27. Open Video Settings. Enable DLSS Neural Rendering, plus whatever Super Resolution, frame generation, and Reflex options you already use. NVIDIA says the effect can be toggled during play and replays. The same driver also prepares systems for other upcoming titles, including Onimusha: Way of the Sword. DLSS 5 itself, for now, is the basketball exclusive. What This Launch Actually MeansA new DLSS version used to mean more frames in more games. DLSS 5 means NVIDIA wants to own the last step of the frame. That is a bigger business than upscaling. It ties image quality to GeForce hardware, GeForce NOW, and a model NVIDIA can update without a full game patch. For players with an RTX 50 card, NBA 2K27 is the first chance to judge the tech in a shipping product instead of a GTC reel. For everyone else, it is a preview and a waiting list.
