Alphabet Shares Fall Over 12% in Worst Day on Record After Earnings
Alphabet shares fell more than 12% on Thursday, marking the company’s worst single-day percentage decline since it went public in 2004. The drop erased roughly $500 billion in market value, the second-largest one-day market-cap loss for any U.S.-listed company, behind only Nvidia’s decline in early 2025.
Class A shares closed down about 12.6%, according to reports. The sell-off followed Alphabet’s third-quarter earnings release on Wednesday. Revenue reached $127.6 billion, up 25% year over year, but missed analyst expectations. Earnings per share came in at $2.12, below the roughly $3 consensus, partly due to an equity stake loss related to SpaceX.
Earnings Details and Spending
Google Cloud revenue rose 103% to $30.7 billion, exceeding forecasts. Search advertising, still the company’s largest segment, grew 12% to about $63.4 billion and missed estimates. Capital expenditures reached $51.4 billion in the quarter, driven largely by AI infrastructure. Free cash flow turned negative by about $9.1 billion. Alphabet maintained full-year capital expenditure guidance of $195 billion to $205 billion.
Management noted that AI Mode in search contributed to lower monetization in some areas. The results highlighted the tension between continued heavy investment in AI and near-term profitability and cash generation.
Market Reaction
The decline weighed on major indexes, including the Nasdaq. Investors have grown more cautious about the scale of AI infrastructure spending across big technology companies and whether returns will keep pace with outlays. Alphabet’s previous largest single-day percentage drop occurred in March 2020 during the early pandemic sell-off.
The stock’s worst prior earnings reaction was smaller. Thursday’s move ranked as Alphabet’s largest one-day market-value loss in its history.
Broader Context
The reaction comes amid ongoing scrutiny of AI-related capital spending by major technology firms. While Cloud growth remained strong, the combination of an earnings miss, elevated spending, negative free cash flow, and moderated search growth drove the sharp reaction. Alphabet continues to develop and deploy frontier AI models, including recent releases in the Gemini family.
