Stephen Curry Takes Less Than the Max in Two-Year, $116 Million Warriors Extension
The Golden State Warriors and their point guard agreed Friday to a two-year, $116 million extension with a player option for 2028-29, league sources told ESPN and other outlets. The team confirmed an extension; the dollars came from reporting. Curry had been eligible since late August for as much as two years and about $136.7 million. He took roughly $20 million less. This season he is still on the expiring $62.6 million year. The new money starts after that: about $55.7 million in 2027-28, then a player option near $60.2 million in 2028-29 if he picks it up. Play it out and it is season 20, all in one laundry. Only a handful of NBA careers have lasted that long with a single franchise.Mike Dunleavy’s statement called Curry the best face a franchise has ever had. That is the job of a GM statement. The basketball job is different: last year Golden State finished 37-45 and missed the playoffs. Curry played 43 games, knee trouble eating the rest, and still averaged 26.6 points with 4.4 made threes — above his career marks when he was out there. He is 38. Camp opens next week. He said midweek he wanted no drama and that the body felt ready. Why the Haircut MattersA max would have been cleaner for the player. A discount is cleaner for the cap. Reporting puts roughly $10 million extra in projected space next summer from this structure, with some local tallies stretching further depending on Brandin Podziemski, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler decisions. Butler is coming back from a torn ACL. The roster around Curry is not a finished product. The cut is a bet that Lacob and Dunleavy will spend the slack on another run, not on a ceremonial farewell tour.Curry could have waited until December or the February 2027 deadline and collected more information. He chose paper now. That kills the annual trade-rumor cycle before media day. It also locks his leverage into a player option two years out instead of unrestricted free agency next July.Career on-court pay crosses $600 million on this paperwork — first player there, by the salary trackers. Off-court money is a separate ledger. What He Still Has to DoFour titles and two MVPs do not get another ring by themselves. The Warriors have to stay healthy and add a second creation layer while Curry is still a high-usage scorer. Taking less does not add a defender. It only makes adding one cheaper. If 2026-27 looks like 2025-26, the option year becomes a conversation about dignity, not contention. If it looks like a playoff team, $60 million in 2028-29 is a bargain relative to what the brand prints. The Simple ReadHe said he wanted to be a lifer. He signed like one, and he left a little money on the table so the front office can pretend the window is still a window. That is the contract. The games start when the knee does.
