Nairobi Wins 2029 Worlds — Africa Hosts the Athletics Championships for the First Time

The World Athletics Championships are going to Africa. The council announced in Budapest on Tuesday that Nairobi will host the 2029 edition — the first time the senior Worlds have been staged on the continent since the event began in 1983. Munich will take 2031 at the Olympic Stadium. London and Rome lost. Beijing remains next, on 10–19 September 2027.Sebastian Coe called Nairobi’s file “compelling and emotional.” He said it mattered that the championships reach Africa when the host, the bid, and the circumstances were right. “Nairobi has demonstrated emphatically that this is their moment.”Kenya is already one of the sport’s factories. It is the second-most successful nation in Worlds history. At Tokyo 2025 it finished second in the medal table with seven golds and 11 medals overall. Faith Kipyegon, Eliud Kipchoge, David Rudisha, Hellen Obiri, Vivian Cheruiyot, Kip Keino, Paul Tergat, Tegla Loroupe — Coe read the roll. Distance running is not a Kenyan hobby. It is a national export. The flagship meet had never come home. How the Bid Was BuiltNairobi missed 2025 to Tokyo. It came back with youth-event experience instead of a first-time speech. The city staged the World U18 Championships in 2017 and the World U20 Championships in 2021. Mombasa held World Cross Country in 2007. Kampala took Cross Country in 2017. Gaborone, Botswana, hosted the World Relays in 2026 — Africa’s first Relays. The continent had collected the supporting programs. It did not have the nine- or ten-day senior championships.Kasarani Stadium is the venue. It is being renovated for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania — East Africa’s first AFCON. World Athletics treated that works program as proof the bowl can handle a multi-day global crowd. Capacity figures in public reporting sit in the high 40,000s to about 60,000 depending on the configuration after renovation. The calendar is September, same window as Beijing 2027.Four cities bid for 2029 and 2031. Coe said it was not easy. London offered the 2012/2017 stadium and a ready television machine. Rome offered history. Munich offered the 1972 Olympic Stadium and a German audience that filled seats for the 2022 European Championships. The council split the pie: Africa first, Germany two years later. Three straight Worlds outside a single region — Asia, Africa, Europe — is the mission statement Coe wanted on the release. What “Historic” Has to SurviveA first African Worlds is a political win and an operational exam.Altitude, traffic, hotel rooms, warm-up tracks, anti-doping labs, broadcast compounds, and last-mile security are the unglamorous half of “woven into the fabric.” Nairobi has run junior Worlds. Senior Worlds bring more federations, more media, more night sessions, and more athletes who have never raced at 1,800 meters above sea level. Distance finals in Kenyan air will be a home edge and a logistics briefing.Integrity will travel with the meet. Kenya’s distance pipeline has also produced a long list of doping cases. Ruth Chepng’etich, the marathon world-record holder, is among those serving a ban. That record will be in every preview from now to 2029. Hosting does not erase it. Hosting does put the testing program under lights in the country that produces so many of the medals. How the Athletics Integrity Unit and local agencies work on site will be part of the story whether organizers want it or not.Money is the other exam. Worlds are not a three-day invitational. They are a city-scale project. AFCON works help the stadium. They do not automatically fund a championship village, transport, or a volunteer army. Kenya will have to show, between now and 2029, that the bid’s emotion has a budget line.London’s Loss, Munich’s LaneBritish officials who backed a London Stadium return are entitled to be gutted. 2017 worked. The Diamond League still lives there. The council chose a map over a proven bowl. That is a strategy choice: grow the sport’s geography rather than recycle a host that already owns the product.Munich 2031 is the comfort edition. Germany hosted in Stuttgart in 1993 and Berlin in 2009. Coe said the country is a dependable major-event host and that Munich has the ingredients for a spectacle. Olympic Stadium nights in September are a known television picture. After Nairobi, the circuit goes back to a venue the commercial partners already understand. What It Means for AthletesFor Kenyan and East African athletes, a home Worlds is a once-in-a-career crowd. For sprinters and throwers who rarely see Rift Valley tickets, it is a new stop with new heat, new travel, and new recovery problems. Federations will start planning camps now. September 2029 is far away in a news cycle and close in a four-year training block.
