Apple’s ‘Surprise and Shine’ Event: iPhone 18 Pro, a Foldable, and a New CEO Take the Stage
Apple’s fall show is tomorrow, and it is not the usual September package. The company has invited press to the Steve Jobs Theater on Wednesday, September 9, at 10 a.m. Pacific — 1 p.m. Eastern — under the line “Surprise and Shine.” The stream will run on Apple’s site, Apple TV, and YouTube. The presentation is expected to be pre-recorded, with a live introduction from the stage. That introduction matters as much as the hardware. John Ternus took over as chief executive on September 1, succeeding Tim Cook. This is his first product keynote as CEO. Hardware is his home turf. The audience will watch how he sells a narrower iPhone lineup and, if the rumors hold, Apple’s first folding phone.None of what follows is confirmed until Ternus says it. It is the consensus of supply-chain reporting, analyst notes, and the invitation itself.A Split iPhone YearThe biggest scheduling change is what is missing.Multiple reports say Apple will not launch a standard iPhone 18, an iPhone 18e, or a second-generation iPhone Air this month. Those models are pointed at spring 2027. September is reserved for expensive phones: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a book-style foldable widely called iPhone Ultra inside the rumor mill.If that split is real, every new iPhone on Wednesday starts in four-figure territory. Memory prices have been cited as one reason the cheaper models slipped. A fall event that only speaks to Pro and Ultra buyers is also a statement about where Apple wants margin this year.Pre-orders for the Pro phones are expected after the keynote, with a wrinkle. Friday, September 11, is the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Apple has avoided that date for commerce before. Saturday, September 12, is the cleaner pre-order window. Retail availability is widely mapped to Friday, September 18. The foldable may not share that calendar. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said early foldable production is tight and that pre-orders could lag the Pro models, possibly into the fourth quarter.iPhone 18 Pro and Pro MaxThe Pro pair is expected to look like last year’s phones with a shorter punch list.Rumored changes include a smaller Dynamic Island, an A20 Pro chip often described as a 2-nanometer-class part, Apple’s own C2 modem, and better wireless silicon. A variable-aperture main camera is the photography story, possibly exclusive to Pro Max at first. That would give photographers more control over depth and low light without waiting for computational tricks alone.Colors in circulation include dark cherry, silver, black, and a light or sky blue. Battery capacity is expected to rise modestly. Display sizes are rumored to stay near 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches.Price talk is less friendly. Analysts have floated starting points around $1,299 to $1,399 for Pro and $1,449 to $1,499 for Pro Max — a hike if Apple follows through. Those numbers are guesses. They fit a year when Apple is not using a $799 slab to pull the average down on the same stage.Siri and on-device Apple Intelligence will get a keynote chapter. iOS 27 is already in public beta. The event will try to make the software feel like a reason to buy hardware, not a footnote. The Foldable Everyone Came to SeeIf Apple shows a folding iPhone, the room will forget the Pro colors for twenty minutes. The rumored Ultra is a book-style device, not a clamshell. Cover display estimates sit around 5.3 to 5.5 inches. Inner display estimates sit around 7.6 to 7.8 inches, with a more tablet-like aspect ratio than a stretched phone. Dummy units that leaked this year looked closer to a Galaxy Z Fold than to a flip.Other rumor points: titanium structure, an attempt at a near-invisible crease, two rear cameras rather than a full Pro triple, Touch ID in the power button instead of Face ID, and iOS 27 features built for two apps side by side. Limited launch supply has been part of the story for months. That matches a first-generation foldable from a company that hates visible failure.A starting price in the $2,000 range would put it against Samsung’s top Fold and Huawei’s tri-fold class without pretending it is a volume product. Apple does not need to win foldable unit share in year one. It needs the object to look inevitable on stage.Call the name Ultra a rumor until the slide appears. The category is not.Watches and the Rest of the TableSeptember events rarely stop at phones.Apple Watch Series 12 is expected, with a faster S-series chip, longer battery talk, and a possible ceramic case option. Watch Ultra 4 is expected to add fitness and satellite tricks — maps and richer Messages over satellite have been in the rumor mix. A Watch SE refresh is widely described as not this year.AirPods 5, in versions with and without active noise cancellation, are on several prediction lists. Macs, iPads, and Apple TV are more likely to wait for later in the season.Six products is the high end of the “likely” list. Three phones and two watches is the safer card. How to Watch, and What Ternus Has to DoLivestream: apple.com/apple-events, the Apple TV app, YouTube. Start time: 10 a.m. Pacific on September 9.Ternus has to do three jobs in about 90 minutes.First, make a Pro-only phone launch feel complete when the phone most people buy is absent.
Second, introduce a foldable without looking late to a category Samsung has been shipping for years.
Third, sound like a CEO, not only like a hardware VP who got the building.Cook’s last years were services, India, and a carefully managed AI catch-up. Ternus inherits those files plus a product that folds. If the Ultra looks unfinished, the internet will not wait for spring. If the Pro phones are only a chip and a color, the foldable has to carry the event. What Not to ExpectDo not expect a cheap iPhone. Do not expect a full AirPods-to-Mac kitchen sink unless Apple breaks its own leak pattern. Do not treat every dummy photo as final glass. Do not assume the foldable ships the same Friday as the Pro Max.Do expect pricing slides that test how far buyers will follow a premium-only fall. Do expect Apple Intelligence demos that try to bury last year’s Siri lag. Do expect supply caveats spoken softly, if at all. After the Lights Come UpPre-order midnight — likely Saturday the 12th for Pro models — will tell more than the applause. Delivery estimates on the foldable will tell more than the crease demo. Spring 2027 will tell whether splitting the iPhone line was strategy or a memory-cost dodge.
