US and China Arm for Space Warfare With Hunter Satellites and Orbital Weapons
The next military competition is not only in the Pacific or the Gulf. It is several hundred miles overhead.The United States and China are preparing for the possibility that a future war would start, or quickly spread, in orbit. Both sides are fielding or testing systems meant to find, follow, interfere with, or disable satellites. U.S. officials call some of those spacecraft hunter satellites. Chinese papers and procurement records describe vehicles that can pursue other craft, linger nearby, and in some concepts even capture or refuel while doing so.This is no longer a theoretical arms race. Chinese satellites have practiced close, synchronized maneuvers that American officers describe as orbital dogfighting. A Chinese reusable spaceplane has released a small satellite into a crowded orbital neighborhood. The United States and Britain recently conducted their first joint military operation in space along the path of a suspected Chinese spy satellite, according to commercial tracking data.Gen. Chance Saltzman, the U.S. Space Force’s chief of space operations, said in July that China is rapidly developing ground- and space-based weapons designed to interfere with or destroy targets. U.S. Space Command has gone further. Offensive space weapons and the ability to counter huge low-Earth-orbit constellations are now listed among its top warfighting priorities for the next decade.Why Satellites Became TargetsModern militaries navigate, communicate, target, and warn through space. GPS, missile-warning birds, spy satellites, and commercial constellations such as Starlink have made orbit part of the kill chain on Earth. If those links fail, ships, aircraft, and ground forces fight half-blind.That dependence created a target list. China watched U.S. and allied forces use space-enabled precision in recent wars and concluded that blinding an opponent’s satellites could be as valuable as sinking a ship. The United States watched China build a dense web of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance satellites — more than 500 ISR-capable spacecraft by Space Force counts — and concluded that Beijing could find American carriers and air wings faster than before.The result is a loop. More satellites for seeing. More weapons for stopping the seeing. More satellites to replace the ones that might be stopped.Hunter Satellites and Close ApproachesThe new worry is not only a missile fired from Earth. It is a spacecraft that shares the sky with its target.Rendezvous and proximity operations can look like inspection or debris removal. The same techniques can look like a weapon. China’s SJ-21 has already towed a defunct navigation satellite to a graveyard orbit, a dual-use demonstration. Other experimental Chinese satellites have made large, rapid maneuvers in geostationary orbit. Five Chinese satellites have flown in tight formation, at times within about half a mile of one another, in what U.S. officials called training.Reuters reported that Chinese military-linked researchers are working on systems designed to pursue and even capture other spacecraft, and on ways to extend fuel so a hunter can stay on station. Those documents do not prove a deployed orbital cannon. They do show a research agenda aimed at staying next to someone else’s satellite for a long time.The United States has its own history of close approaches and classified inspector satellites. It does not advertise a hunter fleet. It does advertise a shift toward “space fires” — coordinated kinetic and non-kinetic effects against adversary space systems — and toward maneuver warfare in orbit.A satellite that can park beside another satellite can photograph it, jam it, dazzle its sensors, grab it, or simply force the owner to burn fuel to get away. Fuel is life in orbit. A forced dodge can kill a spacecraft without a warhead.Ground Weapons Still Matter More — For NowSpecialists still say it is easier to disrupt a satellite from Earth than to win a dogfight in space.China has tested direct-ascent anti-satellite missiles and is assessed to want weapons that can reach higher orbits, including geosynchronous altitude. It fields ground-based lasers that can disrupt or damage sensors, and it regularly trains with jammers against communications, radar, and navigation signals. U.S. intelligence has warned that higher-power lasers later this decade could do more than dazzle.The United States, in a rare public disclosure, said in June that Space Force had introduced a ground-based electromagnetic system from L3Harris meant to disable or disrupt adversary satellites. Other U.S. jammers and sensing tools already exist. President Donald Trump’s proposed Golden Dome missile-defense concept also imagines large numbers of interceptors in orbit, which would add another layer of military hardware to low Earth orbit.Russia remains part of this picture, with its own co-orbital activity and long-standing anti-satellite work. The sharpest public race, though, is now U.S.–China.Spaceplanes and Crowded OrbitsChina has flown multiple reusable spaceplane missions. One stayed up for months. The latest, launched in February 2026, was still in orbit when it released a small satellite into a busy region of space. U.S. analysts treat those flights as testbeds for inspection, deployment, and perhaps more.The United States has the X-37B and a much larger commercial launch industry. America still leads in launch cadence and in proliferated commercial constellations. That lead is the U.S. answer to China’s growing counterspace toolkit: too many satellites to kill cheaply.China is trying to close that gap with its own megaconstellation plans, including SatNet and related projects filed with international regulators on a vast scale. U.S. Space Command’s “counter-pLEO” priority is a polite way of saying the Pentagon wants options if those constellations become wartime infrastructure.Debris is the shared nightmare. A kinetic hit in low Earth orbit can throw shrapnel across pathways used by everyone, including the attacker. That is why both sides also invest in reversible tools: jamming, dazzling, cyber intrusion, and close-in intimidation. A reversible attack is easier to deny and harder to treat as the start of World War III. It is also easier to use first.Doctrine Is Catching Up to HardwareFor years the United States talked about resilience and defense. The new language is offense and superiority. Space Command wants the ability to take down or degrade the other side’s space layer, not only to ride out an attack on its own.China’s military writings treat U.S. commercial constellations as a wartime problem. Starlink’s use in Ukraine convinced many PLA analysts that a private network can become a military utility. Their response has been to study how to blind, swamp, or outbuild it.Neither country has signed a new treaty that would ban these systems. Old outer-space rules restrict nuclear weapons in orbit and the claiming of the Moon. They do not clearly ban a satellite that flies too close, a laser that blinds a camera, or a ground transmitter that floods a frequency.The absence of rules is now policy. Each side arms because the other side is arming. Each side says it is only catching up.What Escalation Would Look LikeA Taiwan crisis or a clash at sea would not stay at sea if commanders believe the first side to lose GPS and targeting satellites loses the war. The opening hours could include jamming, laser dazzling, cyber probes, and close approaches — measures meant to confuse without creating a debris field. If those fail, missiles and co-orbital attacks become thinkable.That ladder is unstable. A hunter satellite can look like a grappling repair bot until the moment it is not. A spaceplane can look like a science project until it releases something next to a spy satellite. Misreading those moves is how accidents become campaigns.Commercial operators are already in the blast radius. Weather satellites, broadband constellations, and civil GPS users would suffer in any serious orbital fight. The public would notice the war as dropped maps, failed calls, and dark missile-warning channels long before it noticed a wrecked spacecraft.The Race OverheadThe United States remains the leading space power. China is closing in numbers, maneuvers, and counterspace variety. Hunter satellites, spaceplanes, lasers, jammers, and official talk of orbital fires all point the same way: space is no longer a sanctuary.
