Rockstar Says GTA 6 Map Is Nearly as Large as GTA 4, GTA 5, and Red Dead Redemption 2 Combined

Rockstar Games has stated that the map in Grand Theft Auto 6 is nearly as large as the playable maps from GTA 4, GTA 5, and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined. The comparison appears in Edge magazine’s cover feature on the game, based on interviews with Rockstar North executives. The total landmass of Leonida, including Vice City and the surrounding areas, approaches the combined size of those three earlier titles. Edge also reports that the map is roughly twice the size of GTA 5. Co-studio head Aaron Garbut told the magazine that the game contains an order of magnitude more interiors than Rockstar’s previous releases. Scale and Density Garbut emphasized density in addition to size. He said every back alley and random location received detailed attention from the development team. “You can go anywhere, any random location, and so many people have thought about that location,” he told Edge. The studio has described Leonida as the largest and most detailed world it has built. Earlier statements from Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson, shared with YouTuber TGG, compared the map to twice the size of GTA 5 and three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. Vice City itself was described as twice the size of Los Santos, with Vice City and its suburbs eleven times larger than Los Santos and its surroundings. Rockstar has not published an official square-kilometer figure. Additional Details from the Edge Feature The Edge report follows a visit to Rockstar North in Edinburgh. It covers NPCs, weather systems, police behavior, and other systems. The magazine notes approximately 600,000 art-directed NPC animations. The game includes advanced weather such as tropical storms and hurricanes. Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Community measurements of prior Rockstar maps have placed GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 in a similar size range, though Rockstar has never released official area numbers. The new combined comparison positions Leonida as a substantial increase in scale while stressing hand-crafted detail across urban, suburban, and rural areas.
