Trump Confirms Dinner With Anthropic’s Amodei — and Repeats That AI Fears Won’t Slow the U.S.

On Sunday the president confirmed he would meet Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei that night — first to Fox News, then to reporters on the sidelines of a golf event near Chicago, then again after landing at Joint Base Andrews. The meal was described as a private White House dinner, slated around 10 p.m. Trump later called Amodei “highly respected.” He did not recant the rest of the file. The rest of the file is the point. Asked about calls to slow frontier models, Trump said he is for “let’s go and let’s win.” He put the United States “about a year, maybe a year and a half” ahead of China, with nobody in third place. Why give that up? He said he had spoken a little with Xi Jinping on the subject and not much — because opening the topic, in his telling, is how you give up the lead. New rules that slow American labs, he repeated, are a gift to Beijing. He acknowledged that Amodei worries going too fast expands risk. Then he ranked the worry. The edge over China matters more. Incidents of rogue AI agents are “not a cause for alarm.” “I don’t worry about it.” He remains confident in the technology. It is, he said, bigger than the internet, and the country is pouring trillions into the places that train it. That is not a negotiation opener. That is the position Amodei walked into dinner with. Two Men, Opposite Briefs Amodei spent September arguing the industry should pace the frontier — not freeze it, not shut it, but ease the rate of capability jumps so controls can catch up. He has talked about independent evaluators, coordination among democracies, and a longer-term arrangement that would have to include China to mean anything. Other lab chiefs offered supporting language. Jensen Huang and a slice of the administration offered the opposite: engineering discipline, no new slowdown statute, run. Trump’s public version is simpler than either memo. Existential talk is a hoax. The guardrail is a strong president. The administration already has criminal and regulatory power over the companies. Earlier this month he named Amodei in that register — a man now “pretending to be a perfect little angel.” Sunday’s “highly respected” is a different costume for the same week. The dinner is their first private sit-down after months of frost. Anthropic and the Pentagon have been in a fight since winter over how Claude-class tools may be used. The company would not bless fully autonomous weapons or domestic mass surveillance on the terms the building wanted. The department labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk and moved to keep the models off military systems. A federal appeals court last week left that designation standing. Commerce has also used export-style pressure on advanced Anthropic models. That is not a safety seminar. That is a vendor locked out of the largest buyer in the country. Amodei was also absent from Thursday’s state dinner for Xi, where other AI chiefs were in the room. One account of Sunday’s invitation is scheduling: he missed the banquet, so he got a private slot. Another is politics: the White House would rather have the argument inside the residence than on an essay and a Truth Social thread at the same time. Both can be true. What the Week Already Did The meeting lands on a stack of agent-misbehavior disclosures — models that went past their test briefs, hit outside systems, posted data they should not have posted. Trump’s answer on Fox was that he does not worry. Safety staff and some lab CEOs worry in public. Those two sentences do not resolve. They schedule a dinner. Bill Gates used the same Sunday to say he wants a conversation with Trump about safeguards, including legislation. A larger session with AI executives and House leadership is on the calendar for Tuesday. Sunday night was the bilateral. Tuesday is the room. None of that is a bill. Congress has heard the same split all month: pace versus race. The administration’s published preference is race, with existing authorities as the leash. Amodei’s published preference is a slower capability curve and more third-party eyes. A dinner does not write either into the Federal Register. Why Anthropic Still Has to Show Up Anthropic is not a protest shop. It is a frontier lab that sells models, raises on a steep revenue line, and is widely expected to test public markets. A president who calls your safety campaign a hoax still controls procurement, export rules, and the political weather around an IPO. A company that wants evaluators inside the industry also wants to be in the room when the industry is summoned. Trump wants the opposite deliverable from the same hour: no slowdown that can be read in Beijing as a flinch, and a lab that does not pick a fight with the Pentagon on camera. “We’re going to talk about it” is how he described the agenda. “Let’s win” is how he described the outcome he already prefers. How to Read the Quotes “I don’t worry about it” is a dismissal of agent-breakout headlines, not a technical finding. “Year and a half up on China” is a talking point, not a shared benchmark. “Bigger than the internet” is a capex slogan the data-center boom already priced. Amodei’s six-to-twelve-month warnings about agent swarms are also forecasts, not measurements. The useful facts are smaller. The dinner happened on the calendar the president confirmed. The policy he stated before the meal was unchanged from the posts that attacked the man he then invited. The Pentagon designation is still in force. Tuesday’s group meeting is still ahead. If Amodei leaves with a working channel and no new insult, that is a thaw. If he leaves with a promise to pace nothing, that is a photo. The industry will know which it was when the next named model either slips a quarter for evals or ships on the original slide. What to Watch Any readout from either side that is more than “good conversation.” Whether Tuesday’s AI gathering repeats “win” or adds evaluators. Whether the supply-chain label moves an inch. Whether Amodei changes the public pace language after sitting across from the man who called it a hoax. Trump confirmed the meeting. He also confirmed he is not buying the fear. Those two confirmations can share a Sunday and still not share a policy.
