Microsoft Puts Nvidia’s RTX Spark in a Surface Laptop and a Dev Box, With a Windows 11 Built to Sandbox Agents
Microsoft stopped talking about an AI PC and priced one.
At a San Francisco event on Wednesday, during the city’s Tech Week, Satya Nadella and Jensen Huang stood in front of the Surface Laptop Ultra, a 15-inch machine built on Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip. Orders open now. Shipping starts October 16, the same day similar laptops from Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and MSI go out. The entry model starts at $2,599. A higher configuration, with a 20-core processor, 128 gigabytes of unified memory, and a terabyte of storage, is $5,899. Microsoft said the top spec was already out of stock. A desktop for developers, the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, starts at $5,999, ships in the United States in November, and comes with VS Code, the GitHub Copilot CLI, WSL, and PowerShell 7 preloaded.
The pitch is local models. CPU, GPU, unified memory, and extra cooling — a vapor chamber on the Surface — so a model can run on the machine instead of a cloud bill. Huang called it a reinvention of the computer. The software half is a revamped Windows 11 with a feature Nadella said will reach every Windows 11 user, not just these boxes: Execution Containers, a sandbox for AI agents so a task does not get the run of the file system.
What Is in the Box
The chip is Nvidia’s RTX Spark, also described as the N1X. The Register’s read is that it is a cut-down of the year-old GB10 platform: a MediaTek-and-Arm CPU of 18 or 20 cores, and a Blackwell RTX GPU with roughly 5,120 to 6,144 cores depending on the bin. The $2,599 “poverty spec,” in that account, is the 18-core part, 24 gigabytes of unified memory, and a 512-gigabyte user-serviceable SSD. The $5,899 step is the 20-core part, 128 gigabytes, and a terabyte. TechCrunch split the bases as about $2,600 and $3,700 before memory and storage pushed the top to $5,900.
The Dev Box is the same idea in a black anodized desktop, aimed at what Microsoft called frontier developers. It quotes one petaflop of AI compute, 128 gigabytes of unified memory, and a Windows 11 image already set up for local model work. Gears of War: E-Day was shown running on the laptop, which is the company’s way of saying a Blackwell GPU in a thin machine can still play a current game, not only answer a prompt.
Microsoft’s comparison, from tests it commissioned or that Nvidia ran on preproduction units, is a MacBook Pro. Machines with the Nvidia chip were said to start AI responses up to 2.1 times faster than a 16-inch MacBook Pro with an M5 Pro, and to generate images up to 4.3 times faster. Those are vendor numbers on unfinished hardware. They are also the fight the event was staged for. Apple has been putting on-device models in the Mac and the iPhone. Microsoft’s answer is a Windows laptop that can hold a larger local model because 128 gigabytes of unified memory is on the configuration page.
The Windows Half
Execution Containers is the feature that outlives the laptop. Nadella said it will be available to all Windows 11 users. The point is permission. An agent that can book a flight, edit a repo, or read a mailbox is an agent that can also do those things wrong. A container is the fence: the task runs in a box, with a defined set of files and tools, instead of inheriting the user session. Reuters described the same announcement as security technology to stop agents reaching data without permission, next to an AI coding model that runs on the PC.
Copilot, in the version shown, can use a local model and a cloud model in the same session. Meta’s Muse personal agent is coming to Windows as an app that uses the same plumbing. The fall Windows 11 builds on these Surfaces arrive with a software suite for local model testing already installed. The ordinary October update for everyone else is the container and the Copilot path, not the 128-gigabyte GPU.
June was the preview. Nvidia said then that Microsoft, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and others would build Windows machines on RTX Spark. Wednesday was the price and the date. October 16 is the laptop. November is the dev box.
Why It Costs This Much
Memory is the tax. A shortage that has Samsung guiding to an $80 billion quarter is the same shortage in a laptop bill of materials. Nvidia has already raised the price of its own DGX Spark desktop by about 75 percent, to $6,950, since launch. A Surface that starts at $2,599 with 24 gigabytes and ends at $5,899 with 128 is a product of that market, not a subsidy. Analysts at the event called price the open question. A developer who can rent the same model in the cloud for cents a query has to believe the local copy is worth a machine that costs as much as a used car.
The buyer Microsoft named is narrow: builders, creative professionals, people who want a model that does not leave the building. A household replacing a three-year-old laptop is not the configuration at $5,899. If the category works, it works as a workstation, the way a Mac Studio works, not as the next Surface for students.
What to Watch
October 16 reviews, especially battery life with a local model running.
Whether Execution Containers ship to all Windows 11 machines on the schedule Nadella named.
The Dev Box in November, and whether the one-petaflop claim survives independent tests.
Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and MSI pricing against the $2,599 Surface.
Any cut to the 128-gigabyte option if memory prices move again.
Microsoft and Nvidia priced a Windows PC for people who want the model on the desk. It starts at $2,599, ships October 16, and runs a Windows 11 that is supposed to keep the agent in a box. The cloud is still there. The new claim is that it does not have to be.
