China’s UBTECH Starts a 10,000-Robot Factory — One Humanoid Every 10 Minutes

UBTECH Robotics says the bottleneck has moved from the lab to the loading dock. The Shenzhen company announced that its Industrial Humanoid Robot Super Smart Factory in Liuzhou, Guangxi, began production over the weekend. The building is about 14,000 square meters and 13.8 meters high. Planned capacity is more than 10,000 industrial humanoids a year. Design takt time: one finished machine every 10 minutes.UBTECH calls it the world’s first intelligent plant engineered for that 10,000-unit scale. The slogan is “robots building robots.” Cruzr wheeled platforms help with depalletizing, palletizing, loading, and material moves. AGVs, unmanned forklifts, and a compact warehouse that holds 112 robots in 65 square meters handle the rest of the loop. Siemens Digital Industries Software helped design the digital twin and scheduling “brain.” People are still on the floor. The pitch is that they are no longer doing every lift and every torque check by hand. The line is meant to build the Walker S series — bipedal industrial humanoids — and the Cruzr series, which swap legs for wheels. That mix matters. Factories buy mobility and payload before they buy a walking mascot.Shares in UBTECH firmed after the news. The company had already reported a jump in full-size humanoid revenue in the first half of 2026. A factory this size is how it tries to turn a hot product line into a cost curve. What “Mass Production” Means HereHumanoid makers have spent years filming one robot climbing stairs. Mass production is a different sport: repeatable tolerances, spare-parts logistics, yield, and a customer who will sign for a hundred units, not three.UBTECH is not the only Chinese name claiming a first this month. XPeng commissioned an automated IRON line in Guangzhou on September 8 and showed a robot walking off the line. XPeng says more than 80 percent of core processes are automated, aims for volume by the end of 2026, and talks about deliveries in 2027 — first in its own stores and parks. ENGINEAI has advertised a Shenzhen plant with a 15-minute cycle on its T800. China’s broader humanoid shipments were already described as dominating global unit counts in the first half of the year.So “world’s first” depends on the footnote: first 10,000-unit designed industrial humanoid factory, first automotive-grade automated line for a general-purpose humanoid, first this company at scale. The honest story is a cluster of Chinese plants turning on at once. Liuzhou is the loudest capacity number this week.Design cadence is not the same as annual deliveries. One robot every 10 minutes is a line speed if the line never stops, never scraps, and never waits on a harmonic drive. Ten thousand units is a planning target. The test is how many walk out the door in 2027 with a paid invoice. Why Liuzhou, Why NowGuangxi is cheaper land and labor than Shenzhen, and Liuzhou already knows how to bolt vehicles together. Humanoids steal that playbook: digital simulation first, flexible cells instead of one rigid conveyor, automotive quality talk. Siemens’ Plant Simulation work is there so the company can rearrange the virtual factory before it rearranges steel.China’s policy stack has been pushing robotics from prototype to batch. National standards for robot control systems took effect this month. Officials have talked about helping smaller firms cross the mass-production gap. Procurement days and “real-scenario training” programs are meant to create the missing piece: jobs a robot can keep without a chaperone. That is the demand problem hiding under the ribbon. A 10,000-unit plant needs factories, warehouses, and inspection routes that will rent the machines. Walker S and Cruzr are sold as industrial embodied intelligence — handling, patrol, line-side work — not as home butlers. If those sites do not absorb four-digit fleets, Liuzhou becomes a very expensive showroom.Unit economics sit next to demand. Industry chatter still circles a sub-$20,000 cost target for a useful humanoid. Until that number is real in a purchase order, capacity is a press release with a roof.Robots Building Robots, With an AsteriskThe phrase is marketing and partly true. Wheeled Cruzrs moving kits for Walker torsos is a closed loop that photographs well. Screwdriving cells and AMRs are not new to auto plants. What is new is treating a biped as the SKU those cells exist to ship.GIGAZINE and other write-ups noted the supporting role: robots do a lot of logistics and fastening; they do not conjure a Walker from empty air. That is fine. Car plants never claimed the paint shop built the car alone. The deeper claim is software. A digital brain that sequences 10,000 mixed Walker and Cruzr builds is the thing that either works or strands half-built legs in a buffer. UBTECH and Siemens are selling that as a template other Chinese robot firms can copy. Copying a factory is easier than copying a customer. The Global Race, CompressedFigure and other U.S. names have talked about crossing a thousand units. Tesla’s Optimus timeline has slipped in public more than once. China’s advantage this month is not a secret algorithm. It is permission to pour concrete and turn a key while Western labs argue about safety pauses and chip export rules. That advantage cuts both ways. A flood of mid-tier humanoids that fail in the third month of a warehouse shift would poison the category. Quality at 10,000 units is harder than quality at 50. Engine supply, actuators, batteries, and after-sales techs have to scale with the line.If Liuzhou hits rate, the conversation moves from “can they walk” to “who buys the tenth thousand.” If it misses, the conversation moves back to demos. What to WatchSustained weekly output, not the opening ceremony. Named industrial customers and utilization rates. Warranty and downtime numbers. Whether Walker S and Cruzr stay in factories or leak into malls as novelty. Whether XPeng’s IRON line and UBTECH’s Liuzhou line end up competing for the same logistics buyers.
