Jokic's Triple-Double Sinks the Lakers: Denver Wins 120-113 Despite Luka's 27 & Hayes' 80% Night

Nikola Jokic reminded everyone why he is the best player on the planet on Thursday night. The Denver Nuggets defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 120-113 at Ball Arena — with Jokic delivering a masterclass triple-double performance that overwhelmed Los Angeles despite a spirited comeback effort and a career-best shooting night from Jaxson Hayes. The Nuggets improve their standing in the Western Conference race. The Lakers, despite strong individual performances, fall short in a game they were very much in until the final minutes. The First Quarter Hole That Cost the Lakers the Game The story of this game was written in the first twelve minutes. Denver came out of the gate blazing — outscoring the Lakers 32-22 in the first quarter, building a ten-point lead that Los Angeles spent the rest of the game trying to claw back. The Nuggets' ball movement was crisp and precise from the opening tip — with Jokic orchestrating the offence with the kind of effortless vision that makes him virtually impossible to guard. Los Angeles levelled the game in the second quarter, outscoring Denver 32-32, and actually took the lead back in the third — outscoring the Nuggets 32-29. But Denver's experience and composure in the fourth quarter — and Jokic's ability to manufacture points at the free throw line — ultimately proved decisive. The Nuggets outscored the Lakers 27-27 in the fourth to hold on for a seven-point win. Nikola Jokic: 28 Points, 12 Rebounds, 13 Assists — Triple-Double There are no superlatives left to describe what Nikola Jokic does on a basketball court. On Thursday night he was at his ruthless, methodical best — finishing with 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting (66.7%), 12 rebounds, 13 assists, 1 steal and 1 block, going a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. His true shooting percentage of 75.6% was staggering. His efficiency game score of 26.5 was the highest of any player on either team. He recorded his triple-double in three quarters. He also turned the ball over 9 times — a figure that would sink any other player's night — but Jokic's production is so overwhelming that even his worst habit barely dents the final ledger. He is, simply, irreplaceable. Jamal Murray: 28 Points, 5-of-9 From Three, Ice Cold in the Clutch Jamal Murray matched Jokic point-for-point with 28 of his own — hitting 5-of-9 from three and going 7-for-7 from the free throw line for a true shooting percentage of 69.7%. Murray's ability to score in transition and off the Jokic pick-and-roll gave Denver a second unstoppable offensive weapon that the Lakers had no answer for. With Murray and Jokic both finishing with 28 points, Denver became only the fifth team this season to have two players score 28+ in the same game. Luka Doncic: 27 Points, 11 Rebounds, 7 Assists — But a Tech Luka Doncic was magnificent and then maddening in equal measure. The Lakers' star finished with 27 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists — his ninth double-double of the season — adding 4 steals in a performance that kept Los Angeles in the game throughout. But he also picked up a technical foul that handed Denver two free points at a critical juncture in the fourth quarter, shot just 50% from the free throw line on 4 attempts, and turned the ball over 3 times. His plus/minus of 0 tells the story of a player who was individually brilliant but whose team ultimately couldn't keep pace with Denver's collective execution. Jaxson Hayes: 19 Points on 80% Shooting — The Best Performance of His Career The most encouraging Laker performance of the night came from Jaxson Hayes, who delivered arguably the best game of his NBA career. The centre went 8-of-10 from the field — 80% — finishing with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists while drawing 5 fouls on Denver's bigs. Hayes was lethal around the rim — converting 8-of-10 attempts at the basket with a points-in-paint percentage of 80%. His true shooting percentage of 77.9% was extraordinary. For a player who has spent much of his career on the margins, Thursday night was a statement performance — and one that gives the Lakers genuine optimism about their frontcourt depth heading into the final stretch of the season. Austin Reaves & Rui Hachimura: Supporting Cast Delivers Austin Reaves added 16 points on 54.5% shooting — adding 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals in a quietly excellent performance. Rui Hachimura contributed 16 points off the bench — going 4-of-5 from three for an 80% three-point clip and 88.9% true shooting — with 3 assists and 1 steal in a sharp, efficient showing. The Lakers' bench scored 45 points in total — but Denver's bench answered with 26 from Julian Strawther (18 pts), Tim Hardaway Jr. (14 pts), and Bruce Brown (8 pts), proving deeper across the rotation. The Defining Numbers: 45.2% From Three, 28 Free Throws Denver shot 14-of-31 from three — 45.2% — against the Lakers' 41.9%. That differential, combined with Denver's 28-of-31 from the free throw line — 90.3% — versus the Lakers' 10-of-15 (66.7%) — was the difference in a seven-point game. The Nuggets were simply more efficient at the line and more consistent from deep. Los Angeles out-rebounded Denver 38 to 49 in personal rebounds but gave up too many fouls and not enough stops.
