OpenAI Tells Investors It Expects to Clear $70 Billion in Annualized Revenue by Year-End

OpenAI is telling investors the $70 billion number is a destination, not a current reading. Bloomberg reported Friday that the company expects to reach or exceed $70 billion in annualized revenue by the end of 2026, according to people familiar with the matter. The same people said the annualized figure was roughly $50 billion at the end of September. Growth is supposed to come largely from the enterprise business. The numbers were shared as part of talks to raise $30 billion or more at a $1.4 trillion valuation before the new money, a round Bloomberg first reported in September. OpenAI declined to comment. Annualized revenue here is a run rate: a shorter period projected out to a year. It is not cash collected, not a full-year audit, and not a number every lab calculates the same way. That distinction is the whole story of the last 48 hours. Why $70 Billion and $50 Billion Both Appeared Last month, outlets reported that OpenAI was already approaching $70 billion in annualized revenue. On Thursday the Financial Times, and then Reuters, said the company had told investors the September figure was approaching $50 billion — about $20 billion under the earlier signal. A person familiar with the matter told Reuters the gap came mainly from an attempt to line OpenAI up with Anthropic. Anthropic counts sales made through cloud partners. OpenAI does not. An investor comparison that added those channels produced a number the company’s own September run rate did not. Friday’s Bloomberg report puts the two figures in sequence. About $50 billion at the end of September. At or above $70 billion by December 31, if enterprise growth arrives as the company is projecting to the people writing the checks. Nasdaq futures firmed after the year-end target was restated, after Thursday’s lower current number had hit tech stocks. The market traded the forecast. It did not get a filing. Anthropic’s own annualized revenue was reported at $65 billion by the end of July. In the second quarter, Anthropic’s quarterly revenue was put at $11.5 billion against OpenAI’s $6.7 billion, the first quarter Anthropic was ahead. OpenAI started 2026 around $20 billion annualized, against about $6 billion in 2024. The climb is real on every version of the chart. The level, this week, depends on who is counting cloud-partner sales and which month is being annualized. What the Raise Is Asking the Number to Do A $30 billion raise at a $1.4 trillion pre-money valuation needs a growth story that does not stall at $50 billion. Twenty billion dollars of run rate in about a quarter is the bridge the forecast is selling. Enterprise is the named engine: seats, usage, and contracts that bill more like software than like a consumer subscription. ChatGPT’s consumer base is the brand. The pitch to this round is the business that pays by the seat and the token. Compute is the cost under the revenue. OpenAI raised $122 billion in a March round alone. The infrastructure commitments attached to the company, through Microsoft and others, are sized for a lab that keeps this slope. A run rate that misses the year-end mark does not unwind those contracts. It changes the multiple investors will pay for the next one. Thursday’s selloff was the first read of that risk. Friday’s bounce was the second. What a Run Rate Does Not Prove A September figure annualized to $50 billion can be a strong month, a weak month, or a usage spike that does not renew. Enterprise contracts can be booked and then under-consumed. Consumer subscriptions can churn. OpenAI’s choice not to count cloud-partner revenue makes its number cleaner and smaller. Anthropic’s choice makes its number larger and harder to compare. Neither is a profit figure. Neither has been disclosed in a securities filing. Both are “people familiar” accounts, and OpenAI has declined to confirm either. The year-end test is narrow. If December’s pace, on OpenAI’s own method, annualizes at $70 billion or more, the forecast given to investors holds. If it annualizes in the mid-50s, the Thursday number was the business and the Friday number was the hope. What to Watch Whether OpenAI confirms either figure, or keeps declining. December’s run rate against the $70 billion line. Terms of the $30 billion raise, and whether the valuation holds at $1.4 trillion. Anthropic’s next annualized update, on its own counting rules. Any shift from revenue talk to cash burn as the round closes. OpenAI expects to clear $70 billion in annualized revenue by the end of 2026. At the end of September, people familiar with the books put the pace near $50 billion. The difference is a quarter of enterprise growth, a fundraising story, and a metric the company will not put its name on.
