Motorola Razr Fold Is Here: The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Killer With 6,200 Nit Screens & 6,000mAh Battery

Motorola just walked into Samsung's house and knocked on the door. At MWC 2026 in Barcelona on March 2, the company officially unveiled the Razr Fold — its first ever book-style foldable smartphone — and the spec sheet is nothing short of extraordinary. Brighter screens than any rival. The biggest battery in the foldable category. A triple 50MP Sony camera system that earned a DXOMARK Gold Label. And a design so slim it's hard to believe what's packed inside. Samsung, take note. The Screens: Brightest Foldable Displays Ever Built Motorola's biggest flex with the Razr Fold is right in front of your face. The 8.1-inch inner LTPO display peaks at a jaw-dropping 6,200 nits — the highest peak brightness ever recorded on a foldable smartphone. The 6.6-inch cover display is barely behind, topping out at 6,000 nits at a 165Hz refresh rate. Both panels support HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and Pantone colour validation, and both run at 2K resolution. To put those numbers in perspective — the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold peaks at 3,000 nits. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 peaks at around 2,600 nits. Motorola hasn't just matched the competition on display quality. It has doubled it. For outdoor use, direct sunlight photography, and HDR video content, the Razr Fold's panels represent a genuine generational leap in foldable display technology. Design: Impossibly Thin for Its Size Despite housing an 8.1-inch display and a 6,000mAh battery — two specs that would normally bulk up any device — the Razr Fold measures just 4.6mm thin when unfolded and 9.9mm when folded. That's thinner open than Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 when closed. The use of silicon-carbon battery technology is what makes this possible — a higher energy density cell that packs more power into less physical space. The device weighs 244g, which is manageable given its size. Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 protects the cover display. Performance: Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 & 16GB RAM The Razr Fold is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 — paired with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB of storage. Motorola has gone with the standard 8 Gen 5 rather than the Elite variant found in some rivals — a decision that will attract scrutiny in benchmarks but is unlikely to impact real-world performance for the vast majority of tasks. The chip is backed by a liquid-cooling system to manage thermals during sustained use. Android 16 ships out of the box, and Motorola has committed to seven years of OS and security updates — a software longevity promise that rivals Samsung's best. Camera: Triple 50MP Sony DXOMARK Gold Foldable cameras have always been the weakest link in the category. Motorola is determined to change that with the Razr Fold. The triple rear camera system features a 50MP Sony LYTIA 828 main sensor with an f/1.6 aperture, 1/1.28-inch sensor size, and optical image stabilisation — one of the largest and fastest main sensors on any foldable. Alongside it sits a 50MP ultrawide with a 122-degree field of view and macro support, and a 50MP periscope telephoto with 3x optical zoom, 100x SuperZoom, and OIS. On the front, a 32MP selfie camera sits on the cover display while a 20MP unit resides on the inner screen. The results speak for themselves. The Razr Fold earned a DXOMARK score of 164 and a Gold Label — the highest camera score ever achieved by a foldable smartphone, and the second-best camera score of any phone currently sold in North America. Motorola has delivered on a category that foldable makers have consistently failed to master. Battery & Charging: The Category's Best The 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery is the largest ever fitted to a book-style foldable — 1,600mAh larger than Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7. Whether those two enormous, ultra-bright displays can be powered efficiently enough for all-day use will be the key question that real-world testing answers. The numbers suggest it should be possible. 80W wired charging via the bundled TurboPower charger and 50W wireless charging ensure top-ups are fast when needed. 5W reverse wired charging rounds out the package. The Moto Pen Ultra: A Point of Difference One of the most interesting differentiators between the Razr Fold and its closest rival is stylus support. The Razr Fold supports Motorola's new Moto Pen Ultra stylus on both displays — inner and outer. Samsung controversially dropped S Pen support from the Galaxy Z Fold 7, leaving professional users without a key productivity tool. Motorola has stepped directly into that gap — and for note-takers, designers, and productivity-focused users, this is a significant point of difference. Price & Availability The Razr Fold is priced at €1,999 in Europe. A US price has not yet been confirmed, though pre-launch rumours suggested a starting price of approximately $1,500 — which would undercut the Galaxy Z Fold 7 by several hundred dollars. North America availability is confirmed for the coming months. A China variant and a limited-edition FIFA World Cup 2026 colourway in black and gold are also expected. The foldable smartphone market just got genuinely interesting again. For more MWC 2026 coverage and the latest in mobile tech, follow digital8hub.com.
