Weekend Watch: Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War Is the Spy Thriller You Need This Weekend

It's the long weekend, you've got a couch, a snack, and a couple of hours to spare. So what are you watching? If you haven't already hit play on Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War, now streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, this is your sign to do exactly that. John Krasinski is back as the reluctant CIA analyst-turned-field operative Jack Ryan, and this time the stakes are higher, the pace is relentless, and the mission is deeply personal. Whether you've been following the Jack Ryan universe since the Amazon series launched in 2018 or you're just looking for a sharp, smart action thriller to fill your weekend — Ghost War delivers. What's It About? The film picks up with Jack Ryan trying to do what he always tries to do: live a normal life. He's out of the CIA, settled into a financial gig, and genuinely attempting to leave the world of covert ops behind. Then, as it always goes for Jack Ryan, someone calls. Deputy CIA Director James Greer (the reliably brilliant Wendell Pierce) pulls Ryan back in when an international covert mission falls apart and exposes a conspiracy far deadlier than anyone anticipated. Racing against the clock — and this film operates almost entirely in real time, which ratchets up the tension considerably — Ryan reunites with sharp-tongued CIA operative Mike November (a scene-stealing Michael Kelly) and forms an unlikely alliance with Emma Marlowe (a commanding Sienna Miller), a razor-sharp MI6 officer who brings her own complicated agenda to the table. Together, the team must track down and neutralise a rogue black-ops unit — people who know exactly how the CIA operates, because they used to be a part of it. Betrayal, misdirection, and a ticking clock drive the plot from London to locations across Europe in what is comfortably the most kinetic Jack Ryan story told on screen yet. The Cast John Krasinski has fully owned this role across four seasons of television, and the leap to film suits him. His Jack Ryan remains the everyman who never quite accepts he's a hero — and that self-awareness gives the film a grounded, human quality that bigger action franchises often sacrifice for spectacle. Sienna Miller is the real standout here. Her Emma Marlowe is cool, calculating, and at times morally ambiguous in exactly the right ways — a character who genuinely keeps you guessing throughout. Her dynamic with Krasinski crackles in a way the series' earlier seasons rarely managed. Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly, returning from the series, feel like old friends — their chemistry is effortless and their banter provides welcome levity without undercutting the tension. Rounding out the ensemble is Betty Gabriel as Elizabeth Wright and Max Beesley as the film's antagonist Liam Crown — a villain who is far more nuanced than the genre usually affords. Directed by Andrew Bernstein (a veteran of the series) and scored by Ramin Djawadi — the composer behind Game of Thrones and Mission: Impossible — the film has serious pedigree behind the camera as well as in front of it. The Action — and the Approach One of Ghost War's most notable creative choices is its commitment to practical filmmaking. A behind-the-scenes featurette available on Prime Video shows the cast undergoing genuine tactical training and performing much of their own stunt work — and it shows on screen. The action sequences feel grounded and physical in a way that CGI-heavy blockbusters rarely achieve. The real-time structure is a bold gamble that largely pays off. It keeps the film lean and propulsive, though it does occasionally leave little room to breathe or develop the conspiracy's deeper layers. At 1 hour and 46 minutes, Ghost War wastes very little time. What the Critics Are Saying The critical response has been mixed — Ghost War currently sits at 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers divided on whether the film's stripped-back approach is a feature or a bug. Some felt the plot leaned too heavily on familiar thriller conventions; others praised the ensemble performances and the film's willingness to keep things grounded. For fans of the Jack Ryan series specifically, however, the audience reception has been warmer. The film rewards viewers who know these characters — their history, their dynamics, and the world they inhabit. If you've watched the show, Ghost War feels like a well-earned payoff. Should You Watch It? Yes — especially if: You're a fan of the Amazon Jack Ryan series You enjoy grounded, real-world spy thrillers in the vein of Mission: Impossible or Zero Dark Thirty You want a tightly edited action film that respects your time Sienna Miller in a sharp MI6 role sounds like exactly what you need Maybe wait if: You haven't seen the series and need backstory context You prefer slower, character-driven drama over action You're looking for something to watch as a family (this is rated R, with visceral action and strong language) The Verdict Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War isn't reinventing the wheel — but it spins it with real confidence. It's a well-assembled, performance-driven spy thriller that proves the big screen is a natural home for this franchise. Krasinski's Ryan continues to be one of the more believable action heroes in modern cinema, and the supporting cast elevates what could have been a serviceable thriller into something genuinely worth your Saturday night.
